Michael Elias, a 6'2, 200-lb safety from Ann Arbor Huron was one of the many recruits in Allendale for Saturday's game against Northern Michigan. Elias had been to campus for the team's annual summer camp and GVSU has impressed him each time.
"The campus was all brand new and the indoor practice field their building is huge, I liked the campus alot," he said, "My visit on Saturday went really well."
The visit was his first chance to see the Lakers in action on the field. The team did not disappoint, turning in a 44-14 victory.
"The team was very good. Coach Pawlowski told me he was worried because they had alot of injuries but they seem to have very good backups. I liked the coaches alot, even though they're winning alot the coaches mentality is to work even harder."
Dayton, Robert Morris, Saginaw Valley State and Central Michigan are the other schools recruiting Elias. He turned in an outstanding senior season, making 70 tackles, 5 TFL's, 4 INT's , 2 FR's, and 1 blocked punt.
With his size, there has been some thought that he could build himself into a linebacker in college.
"I'm not sure if schools are looking at me for linebacker or saftey," he admitted, "but I'll be ready to play either position."
While his position is up in the air, what is certain is that GVSU is a legitimate possibility for Elias. Although he isn't quite ready to make a decision yet, this past weekend's visit certainly made an impression on the young man.
"I spoke with Coach Pawlowski and he told me he would be in contact with me sometime soon. Grand Valley is at the top of my list for schools right now, and id like to take another visit there sometime soon. I'm not sure when I'll decide on a college but probably after I'm done visiting schools."
