Lakers Get Commitment Number One

Grand Valley got their first verbal commitment for the 2008 recruiting class this week. A 1st team All-State linebacker from the east side has decided to play his college ball in Allendale.

The GVSU recruiting class of 2008 is officially under way. This week, the Lakers received their first verbal commitment in the class, Chippewa Valley (Clinton Twp, MI) LB/DE Ricky Shorkey.

"I did it two days ago," Shorkey told GVReport, "Going up there and taking a looking around was amazing. They put together everything really well, it was nice to see campus and everything."

The 6'4, 200-lb Shorkey was a 1st team All-State selection as a senior, racking up 118 tackles, 3 sacks and an INT.

He had been considering a number of other schools including Northwood, Saginaw Valley State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan and others, but ultimately, Allendale felt like the right place.

"They just have a great campus," he said, explaining his decision, "it's compact, you don't have to go too far for classes. Also, my major is criminal justice and they have a great criminal justice program."

Although the Lakers have a ton of young talent at the linebacker position, Shorkey has the versatility (played defensive end and in coverage) and special teams ability to see the field next season.

"They said they're not sure if they want to redshirt me, but they're more on the verge of not, because I'm versatile and I can play all over the place. But its more up in the air, they said they'd see once I got there and practiced and they can really see what I can do."

Regardless of when he gets on the field, Shorkey has the talent to eventually be a key contributor for Grand Valley.

GVReport will have much much more on Shorkey in the coming days including a scouting report, recruiting history and video highlights.
