The Book on Matt Armstrong

One of the top early commitments for GVSU is Lansing Sexton OL Matt Armstrong. The 1st team All-Stater in both football and track is set to take his talents to Allendale. Here is our scouting report on him and comments from him on his commitment and more.

Armstrong has great physical tools. He has the ideal build for an interior lineman, he isn't too tall or too short, and has a thick, powerful frame. He has great physical assets. For a big man, Armstrong can really move (5.1 forty). He also is strong (15 reps of 225-lbs) and powerful in the running game. All the tools are there for him to succeed, he just needs to improve his technique and be more consistent.

Why he chose Grand Valley:

It was just a good fit for me. Plus, I'll be doing track (shot put) here so between that and football, it was like I got a full ride. Plus, I talk to my man (fellow Sexton grad) Sam Allen a lot and he had a lot of good things to say.

Which other schools were recruiting him:
There were a lot of MAC schools but no one offered. I went up to Michigan, but I wasn't really expecting an offer, I just wanted to see a game. Northwood, Hillsdale, schools like that were on me too, but I figured if I was going to go D2, I'd come here.

Where he'll line up:
I'm going to be playing guard.

Sexton WR Jacob Payne, a Grand Valley recruit:
He's a great player, I've been telling him to work hard on his grades so he can come here.
