It isn't as if the praise isn't deserved though. A four-star prospect out of high school, Gates' elusive and explosive running style made him a sough after recruit and drew comparisons to Reggie Bush. After commiting to San Diego State, he headed to Saddleback CC where he played two season and committed to Colorado. Unable to make the requirements in Boulder, Allendale now appears to be one of his options.
"I visited Grand Valley a week ago," he said, "it is probably my top school right now and really the only school I am considering."
The Lakers have made an offer to the 5'11, 195-lb Gates and although he is taking his time on making the right choice, he says he is closing in on a decision date.
"I'll probably make one by the end of next week," he reported.
For a west coaster like Gates, one might assume the wintery weather in Allendale was a bit of a shock, but he had a pleasant trip out to the Great Lakes.
"The campus is really nice, they're building a lot of new stuff and there is a variety of stuff for students to do on campus."
A key component Chuck Martin and company look for in recruits is versatility and Gates has it. At GVSU, he could play running back, slot receiver, return kicks and maybe even see some time on defense. Some of this was discussed on his visit and he feels comfortable with the system and the staff.
"They offense is kind of similar to Saddleback's," he said, "they just get balls to their playmakers. The coaches are cool, up front, and honest, they dont B.S. you, they let you know everything up front and want what is best for the kids."
GVReport will continue to keep you posted on Gates and the other JUCO recruits the Lakers are pursuing.
