Notebook: GVSU at Wayne State

A battle of two top 25 teams will take place in the Motor City on Saturday as #1 Grand Valley heads to Detroit to take on #25 Wayne State.

#1 GVSU (10-0) at #25 Wayne State (8-2)

Grand Valley has won 21 straight over Wayne State, but this is the first time the Warriors have come into this game ranked in quite some time.

The Lakers will once again have to contend with super junior running back Joique Bell, one of the best players in all of D2.

On what could be a rainy day, it will come down to the running games, namely Bell and the Lakers' combo of Jimmy Berezik and P.T. Gates.

The Warriors have been "bend don't break" on defense as they are 6th in the nation in scoring defense, but only 80th in rush defense, that spells trouble against Berezik, who is only 32 yards away from the 1,000 yard mark.

Wayne State has gotten a big boost in the return game, particularly from freshman Josh Renel and the Lakers must make sure they stay in their lanes and contain and not allow the Warriors to have good field position. If that happens, they can force freshman quarterback Kevin Smith to put the ball in the air.

Smith has been excellent this year, but has not been forced to win a game just yet and he has not seen the type of pressure the Lakers will bring. How well he handles that could determine how well the day goes for Wayne State.
