Stokes Finds a Home

One of the top kickers in the midwest made his choice today as Merrillville (Ind.) kicker Ryan Stokes committed.

Ryan Stokes, Merrillville's outstanding place kicker committed to the Grand Valley State Lakers today. GVReport caught up with him for the lowdown.

So take us through your commitment.
Coach Martin came to school today. I was surprised he came out in the snow actually. He and my recruiting coach, Coach Koehler, came to talk to me. They offered me last week either Thursday or Friday. I told them I'd take the weekend to think about it and come up with some questions for them with my dad and my family.

So what are some of the reasons you chose to become a Laker?
I like the feeling of the coaching staff. The facilities are great and so is their program prestige.

How much of a factor was the chance to play early?
It was a huge factor. I talked with Coach Martin and he expects me to play as a freshman. It was definitely key for me. He said he would be pretty disappointed if I didn't play next year.

When we last talked, you mentioned that a good soccer program would be very important to you, how did you balance that out in this decision?
The other schools that offered me had better soccer programs, but their football programs couldn't compare. I decided to committ to Grand valley and not play soccer, just because of football program they have there.

So it's a good bet Laker fans will see you out there next year?
They said that, probably out of all commitments, I'm going to be the only one who plays next year. Like this year, they redshirted every freshman.
