Warrior Volleyball: Costas is King

Costas Theocharidis is named the nations top player for the second time, teammates Tony Ching and Delano Thomas named first team All-Americans.

COLORARO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Hawai'i outside hitter Costas Theocharidis was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) National Player of the Year, Wednesday, and in the process became the nation's first ever four-time first team All-American. Considered the most decorated men's volleyball player in school history, Theocharidis takes home his second national player of the year award after winning it in 2001, his sophomore season. Theocharidis joins former Rainbow Wahine Teee Williams as the only two UH volleyball players to win the award twice. Last week, Theocharidis was voted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's player of the year, an award he also won in 2001. Theocharidis ended his career as the program's all-time kill leader (2,198) after averaging 5.33 per game this past season. He also holds the school record for kill attempts (4,510) and service aces (121). Among his other accolades include; 2000 AVCA Newcomer of the Year, four-time All-MPSF, 2002 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America second team, and 2002 NCAA Championships Most Outstanding Player. Also joining Theocharidis on the 10-member All-America first team was teammates Tony Ching and Delano Thomas. Both Ching and Thomas were named to the All-MPSF second team, last week. This past season, Ching finished second on the team in kills (3.73), while hitting .355. Thomas was the team's top blocker (1.40) and held the highest hitting percentage (.446). The Warriors finished the 2003 season with a 24-6 record but were eliminated by Brigham Young in the semifinals of the MPSF Championships.
