Softball: WAC CHAMPS!!!!!
RUSTON, LA. - Hawaii (37-18, 17-3) swept both ends of a doubleheader at Louisiana Tech (16-38, 6-10)by the scores of 6-3 and 7-0 to secure its first-ever Western Athletic Conference title. In game one, Tech jumped out to an early three run lead after scoring in both the first and second innings. Jen LaRussa drove in Amber Miles a play after Brittany Stanley had scored on a defensive miscue to give the Lady Techsters an early 2-0 lead after one frame. Tech would score again in the second inning on a defensive mistake to take a 3-0 and chasing Melissa Coogan after only 1.1 innings, her shortest outing of the season. However, Shannon Tabion (6-8) came into the game and silenced the Tech bats over the final 5.2 innings to pick up the win and allowed Hawai`i an opportunity to score six unanswered runs, highlighted by a 3-run homer by Stacey Porter in the fifth, to pull out the victory. Marla Pinkston (11-17) took the loss for Tech throwing a complete game and allowing five earned runs with six strikeouts. In game two, Hawai`i got its best pitching performance of the four-game series as Coogan (29-9) shut out the Lady Techsters, 7-0. Coogan's win ties her for the single-season record with 29 wins along with Brooke Wilkins (1994 & '95). Tech's Sabra Warner (0-4) suffered the loss throwing five innings and allowing seven runs. The big bat for UH was Porter, who hammered her second homer of the afternoon, and went 3-for-6 in the twinbill with 5 RBI. That ends the regular season for UH. The pairings for the NCAA Women's College Softball World Series is May 11.
