Softball: Hawaii headed to Texas for Regional

The UH Wahine softball team plays LSU on Thursday in first round action of the NCAA Tournament in Austin, Texas.

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i softball team drew a No. 5 seed in Region 3 of the 2003 NCAA Tournament. Texas is the No. 3 seed overall and hosting the region. The eight brackets were named Sunday, and the Rainbow Wahine open up against the LSU Tigers (49-16) in the first game of Region 3 at 9 a.m. (4 a.m. HST) on Thursday, May 15. Bob Coolen's squad is fresh off its first Western Athletic Conference title posting an overall record of 37-18 and 17-3 in the league. Hawai`i is one of two teams from the WAC in the 64-team bracket. Fresno State, which finished second to UH, is hosting Region 2 and is the No. 4 seed. UCLA drew the No. 1 seed in Fresno. The top seeds in the NCAA Tournament are No. 1 Arizona, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Washington, No. 6 Cal State Fullerton, No. 7 DePaul, and No. 8 is Alabama. In the other matchups in the first round of the Texas regional, following the LSU-Hawai`i game at 9 a.m., No. 8 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 1 Texas meet at 11:30 a.m. with No. 6 Southwest Texas and No. 3 Arizona State playing at 3 p.m., while No. 7 Tennessee Tech and No. 2 Northwestern conclude first round play at 5:30 p.m. There is one elimination game to close the first day of play between the losers of the UH-LSU game and TAMCC-TEX game.
