Daniel Moraga's recruitment down to the wire

Oxnard (Calif.) Pacifica HS three-star tight end Daniel Moraga is closing in on his decision with a week until National Signing Day. See what he said about his visit to Hawaii and which schools are in the mix.

The race to National Signing Day is on and three-star athlete Daniel Moraga is one of the top available prospects on the Mountain West’s radar.

Moraga started the final January recruiting stretch with an official visit to Hawaii. He said that the UH staff was the first to offer him and have kept the most constant contact throughout the process.

“It was a really fun experience,” Moraga said of his visit to Hawaii. “I wasn’t really expecting things to be done for me like they were. The coaches were very nice and it was like a family there. The team was close like brothers and the coaches were involved with everything. It’s a real family bond.”

Moraga is a two-way athlete who now stands at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds. Hawaii first offered him as a linebacker, but after he totaled 1,050 yards, 11 TDs, 65 catches despite missing the last three games to a broken shoulder, UH thought they could use him on offense instead.

Said Moraga, They offered me as a defensive player, but then they saw my senior highlights and changed their mind to play at tight end. They said if I commit, I can begin at one position and then switch if I need to.”
Moraga’s recruitment is ongoing beyond his visit to the Islands. He took an official visit to Sacramento State on Jan. 20. New Mexico and Wyoming are both in the picture for his third visit, but Fresno State also jumped into the mix with a late offer.

The Bulldogs sent their new defensive coordinator Orlondo Steinauer for an in-home visit, suggesting that they see him on the other side of the ball. Moraga doubles as a linebacker.

“On defense, I think I’m an aggressive player,” Moraga said. “I go all out. I’m the type of player to be at the ball every play. I’m relentless on the defensive side. I try to make big plays when we need it. On offense I'm the go-to guy to make a play for the team. I’ll go up and get the ball.”
