Volleyball: Wahine tame Bulldogs

Hawaii defeats Fresno State in three games in the first home WAC match of the season.

HONOLULU - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (14-1, 2-0 WAC) swept through the Fresno State Bulldogs (12-4, 2-1 WAC) 30-22, 30-19 and 30-24 in front of a crowd of 6,507 at the Stan Sheriff Center Thursday.

Kim Willoughby led the way for Hawai`i with 19 kills, 10 digs and three aces while hitting .412. Lily Kahumoku added 16 kills and 11 digs, while Maja Gustin put away eight kills and four blocks. Melissa Villaroman led the charge in the back row, ending up with 14 digs. Nohealani Tano added five kills and three blocks, while Lauren Duggins had five kills.

Local product Tuli Peters, a Kahuku High School graduate, ended the match with nine kills and 12 digs while hitting .364.

Hawai`i took an early 12-8 lead in game one, leading the Bulldogs to take a quick timeout. Fresno State fought back after the break, going on a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to just one point at 14-13. But that would just fire the Rainbow Wahine up, as they would go on a 9-3 run of their own to go up 23-16 and force another Fresno State timeout. UH would keep it going, as they would go on to take the first game 30-22.

The Bulldogs would keep it close at the start of game two before a 5-1 run by the Rainbow Wahine put them up 9-5. Hawai`i would keep running it up, taking leads of 24-15 and 28-18 before taking the game 30-19. Willoughby finished with eight kills on just 10 attempts in game two.

UH kept the pressure on in game three, taking leads of 18-9, 21-11 and 24-15 before taking the third game 30-24.

The Rainbow Wahine will next host the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m.
