Baseball: Bows fall in extra frames to Texas

Hawaii forces extra innings only to see the fifth ranked Longhorns score four runs in the 11th for the win.

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (0-2) fell to the No. 5 Texas Longhorns (2-0) 13-9 in 11 innings in front of a crowd of 3,759 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday. Clary Carlsen picked up the loss while Texas' Huston Street got the win.

Joshua Green had his second-straight three-hit game, going 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run. Nathan Thurber hit 2-for-5 with three RBI and a double, while Rocky Russo added a 2-for-4 game with two runs and two walks.

The Longhorns struck early and often, picking up three runs in the first before Jaziel Mendoza scored on a passed ball and Green singled in Russo to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Texas came back with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to extend their lead to 8-2.

Hawai`i then started to chip away in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Russo scored in the fourth before Andrew Sansaver doubled in a run then scored another in the fifth to cut it down to 8-5. Thurber then came up with the big hit in the sixth, whacking a two-run single to put UH within one run at 8-7.

After a scoreless seventh inning, Thurber came up big again in the eighth, doubling in another run to tie the score at 8-8.

Neither team would muster anything in the ninth, sending the game into extra innings. The Longhorns scored a run in the 10th inning and were threatening to score another until Mendoza caught a line drive and threw out the UT runner at third, keeping Hawai`i within a run.

In the bottom half of the inning, Matthew Inouye, who had entered the game as a pinch-runner in the eighth inning, smacked a two-run double to tie the score again at 9-9.

In the top of the 11th, the Horns singled in a run before freshman Drew Stubbs hit a three-run homer that would seal the deal, giving Texas the 13-9 victory.

The Rainbows and the Longhorns will close out their three-game series tomorrow at 4:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. Keahi Rawlins is scheduled to pitch for the 'Bows against UT's Kyle McCulloch.
