Sugai Named District VIII Academic All-American

Senior midfielder Joelle Sugai added another academic award to her long list of honors after being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-Distict VIII women's soccer first team. It is the second straight year she earned a spot on the first team.

Sugai, a team co-captain, holds a 3.78 GPA as a pre-business major. It is the second time in as many days that she has earned an award. On Wednesday evening she was named to the all-Western Athletic Conference first team. The Aiea native is a three-time UH scholar athlete and has been twice named academic all-WAC squad. Sugai leads the team in assists (6) and has maintained a string of 80 straight matches started since her freshman season. She has provided a reliable left-side midfielder throughout her career and ranks first at UH in matches played (80) and second in assists (19).

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, at least a sophomore in athletic and academic standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20. The award is voted on by collegiate sports information directors in each district. District VIII consists of nine western states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Hawaii.

As a first-team all-district selection, Sugai is eligible to make the national team to be decided in late November.

Sugai and her Rainbow Wahine teammates begin their chase for a championship as the WAC Tournament, hosted by Hawaii, begins today, with four teams playing in the quarterfinal round at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Third-seeded UTEP takes on sixth-seeded Fresno State at 5:00 p.m., while fourth-seeded Hawai`i and fifth-seeded Tulsa face off at 7:30 p.m. The winners advance to the semifinals to play second-seeded Rice and top-seeded SMU, respectively, Nov. 5.
