To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, at least a sophomore in athletic and academic standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20. The award is voted on by collegiate sports information directors in each district. District VIII consists of nine western states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Hawaii.
As a first-team all-district selection, Sugai is eligible to make the national team to be decided in late November.
Sugai and her Rainbow Wahine teammates begin their chase for a championship as the WAC Tournament, hosted by Hawaii, begins today, with four teams playing in the quarterfinal round at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Third-seeded UTEP takes on sixth-seeded Fresno State at 5:00 p.m., while fourth-seeded Hawai`i and fifth-seeded Tulsa face off at 7:30 p.m. The winners advance to the semifinals to play second-seeded Rice and top-seeded SMU, respectively, Nov. 5. The championship match is set for 4:00 p.m., Nov. 6.
