Oral Roberts Tough Oppponent For 'Bows

Riding its best start in 32 years, the Hawai'i men's basketball team meets Oral Roberts in the semifinals of the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic, Wednesday, Dec. 22. Tip-off is set for 7:35 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

This Week's Matchup The 'Bows are 6-0 after a 54-45 victory over Long Beach State in Monday's opening round. The last time a UH team started 6-0 or better was the 1972-73 squad which won its first seven games. UH shot just 28.1 percent in its win over the 49ers. Sophomore guard Matt Gibson led the way with 15 points off the bench while senior forward Jeff Blackett posted his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Oral Roberts (8-0) advanced in the tournament after an 81-63 victory over Georgetown on Monday. The Golden Eagles led by 10 at the half and cruised behind the hot hands of Caleb Green (26) and Luke Spencer-Gardner (25). The teams have met just once, with UH prevailing 80-78, Jan. 3, 1982 at the Neal Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. Oral Roberts shot 49.1 percent from the field in Monday's 81-63 victory over Georgetown. They were paced by the hot shooting of Caleb Green (9-of-12) and Luke Spencer-Gardner (7-of-10). Green finished with a game-high 26 points while Spencer-Gardner added 25 and hit all four of his 3-point attempts. Green is averaging team-bests of 18.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Spencer-Gardner is averaging 12.6 points and 4.6 assists per game. Head coach Scott Sutton is in his sixth season at the helm. He is the youngest son of current Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton.
