Warriors Win In Sweeping Fashion

IRVINE, Calif. - Outside hitter Pedro Azenha had 18 kills and hit .500 to lead No. 4 Hawai`i to a straight-set win (30-27, 30-22, 30-25) over No. 11 UC Irvine Saturday night at Crawford Court before 695 fans.

Hawai`i improves to 6-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. UCI drops to 3-7 and 1-4 MPSF.

The Warriors hit .375 as a club, holding the Anteaters to a mere .238 hitting percentage. UH was aided by 17 UCI hitting errors.

Hawai`i libero Alfred Reft led all players with eight digs. The Warriors out-dug the Anteaters 32-20 and also finished with a 12.5 to 5.5 block advantage. Brian Beckwith and Maulia La Barre each had five block assists for Hawai`i.

UCI's Jason Jablonsky put away 11 kills to lead the Anteaters while middle blocker Aaron Harrell added 10. Setter Brian Thornton topped the team with six digs and 38 assists and libero Brandon Mel came up with five digs. Middle blocker David Smith led UCI with three block assists.

UH returns home to host a pair of MPSF matches with Stanford next week, Feb. 3-4, at the Stan Sheriff Center at 7 p.m.
