HONOLULU – Vantz Singletary makes no bones about it.
Hawaii is his home, but Texas is where he was born, and Texas is where is heart is.
That is what makes landing a coaching internship with the Houston Texans all the more exciting.
"So many coaches from all over the country apply for these positions. Houston's facility is within walking distance from home," the University of Hawaii defensive line coach said Monday morning. Teams receive about 300 applications each for two positions – one on offense and another on defense.
"It's important for me to evolve mentally, to learn new techniques," he added.
Singletary's fifth internship with an NFL team brings him to Dom Capers, a former UH assistant in the early ‘70s. "If I could do 30 (internships), I'd do 30. For me, it's almost like going to the White House and doing an internship," he said.
Singletary will be there when the Texans battle the Dallas Cowboys, and he will still be there when they play in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.
"This opportunity is incredible," he said.
The internship begins July 15 and ends August 6.
