University of Hawaii assistant coach Scott Rigot has decided to leave to take a similar position at the University of Kentucky. Rigot is a former colleague of Kentucky head coach Tubby Smith, and he cites that as one of the major factors in his decision. Kentucky offered Coach Rigot a substantial raise in pay, but the decision was a tough one due to love his family feels towards Hawaii. However, when it came down to making the final choice, the factors of money, Tubby Smith, and the prestige of Kentucky were just too much to turn down.
"Tubby Smith is the primary factor," Rigot told The Honolulu Advertiser. "He's a great friend, and it's also a chance to coach at one of the great basketball schools in the nation."
Head Coach Riley Wallace now needs to find a replacement for Rigot, and that will be a tough task. Rigot is credited for opening the pipeline between UH and Europe. His recruiting prowess will be missed, and Hawaii needs to sign a coach who is able to maintain Hawaii's stronghold on European recruiting.
