Defensive lineman Mel Purcell Jr. has not qualified academically to play for the Warriors this season, and will be forced to sit out the 2002 football season. While Purcell had a 3.6 G.P.A., he did not get a high enough score on the SAT. He will look to retake the SAT and enroll as soon as January.

Purcell, a 6'5, 230-pounder, was one of the best recruits in Hawaii's 2002 class. He chose Hawaii over Oregon and Fresno State. Purcell hails from American Samoa.
