Whieldon quits football team

Warrior reserve leaves because of family reasons.

University of Hawaii head coach June Jones announced Monday that reserve quarterback Jason Whieldon has quit the team due to personal reasons.

Jones said Whieldon has withdrawn from school and does not expect him to return in the spring.

UH announced last Friday that Whieldon was going to take some time off due to personal reasons. At the time, he was expected to return to the team this week in time to make the trip to El Paso.

Whieldon, from Orange, Calif., played football at Saddleback Community College before coming to Hawaii. In two games, he has thrown for 86 yards and three touchdowns.

Jones also announced that Shawn Withy-Allen is now the backup behind starter Tim Chang.

The Warriors (1-1) travel to Texas El Paso (1-2) in their WAC opener this Saturday.
