Wahine disarm powerful Russian's

Hawaii looks sharp in exhibition win. Face Houston and St. Mary's next.

The second ranked Wahine have faced their share of tough opponents
in the early portion of the season, but none tougher then Samorodok,
a professional team from Russia's second highest league, in an exhibition
match Tuesday evening at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Wahine responded with arguably their best match of the season,
exhibition or not, beating Samorodok 31-29, 30-21, 28-30 and 30-26.
The All-American leftside duo of Lily Kahumoku and Kim Willoughby
connected on 51 of the teams 68 kills. The Wahine were equally tough
at the net with 16 rejections, while libero Melissa Villaroman contributed
an eye opening 25 digs in the four game victory.
The Wahine hosts the University of Houston on Friday and St. Mary's
College on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center in the final two matches
before conference play begins.

 Logo UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON COUGARS
                     7-3 Record
The Cougars opened the season winning their first seven matches,
but have since cooled off, dropping the last three. Houston returns
four starters from last year's squad that finished 16-11. The Wahine
and Cougars faced one another last year in Houston, with the Wahine
winning in three games 30-22, 30-18 and 30-10. The Cougars are led by
middle blocker Jenny Tanneberger who leads the teams in kills with 4.66
per game and blocks with 1.29 per game. Houston has appeared in the NCAA
tournament 10 times, most recently in 2000. The University of Houston is
a member of Conference USA.  The two teams have met six times with Hawaii
holding a 6-0 advantage.

3-4 Record

The Gaels come into Saturday's match with a 3-4 record. That mark
may be a bit deceiving as St. Mary's has lost to perennial Top 25 teams
Pacific,
Arizona and Stanford.  Lindsey Bogason leads the team with 3.36
kills per game while Stacy O'Connor averages 1.37 blocks per game. Setter
Brooke Lowry averaged a double-double in a tournament hosted by the
University of Pacific last weekend and was named to the all-tournament
team. The Gaels finished last season with a 5-21 mark. Head coach Jon
Stevenson is in his first year. The Gaels are members of the West Coast
Conference.
Hawaii has won all four meetings between the two schools.
