Football: Warriors to face SMU in WAC home opener

Hawaii back home after nearly a month away from Aloha Stadium.

SMU-  Mustangs have gotten out of the gates slowly to start the season, having lost all four games they have played….Phil Bennett is in his first season as the head coach….The Hawaii game is the conference opener for SMU….Mustangs are 1-5 in WAC openers since joining the league in 1996….This will be the third straight road game….Offense averages only 10.8 points per game….Have the conferences leading rusher in Keylon Kincade who averages 116.5 yards a game….Cody Caldwell is first in the conference and fourth nationally in punt returns averaging 19.6 yards per return….Defense has allowed 12 pass plays of 20 yards or more….Selected seventh in conference preseason media poll….Linebacker Vic Viloria is on the Lombardi and Butkus Award list.

HAWAII- Return to Aloha Stadium after playing two road games and having a bye week in between….Won conference opener at UTEP last weekend 31-6 and are 2-1 overall….Safety Hyrum Peters was named WAC defensive player of the week for his efforts against the Miners….Leads series with the Mustangs 3-1….Warriors are 1-2 in WAC home openers under June Jones….Offense averages 41.3 points and 467.3 yards per game, tops in the WAC….Offensive line has allowed only two sacks….Four Warriors listed as "out" for Saturday's game….They are DL Lui Fuga ( fractured left ankle), RB Jonathan Kauka ( Sprained right knee), DB Matt Manuma (Strained left knee), and DB Leonard Peters ( strained right abdomen)….Have not trailed at halftime of any of the first three games…. Selected  fourth in conference preseason media poll.
