HONOLULU -- Former Warrior Joe Correia has signed to play in NFL Europe for the 2003 season and will play tight end, according to close friend Lui Fuga.

Correia, a 1995 St. Louis graduate, tried out for the San Francisco 49ers this past summer. Fuga said Correia was contacted by the 49ers about the opportunity and has already signed to play.

Although Correia has never played tight end, this isn't the first time Correia will be playing a new position. During his career at Hawaii, Correia was recruited as a quarterback and later switched from defensive end to linebacker during his senior season. Correia, 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, runs the 40-yard dash in 4.81 seconds, bench press 225 32 times and has a max bench of 455.

"He's just an athlete," said Fuga. "He can play anywhere."

As for Fuga, he is continuing with his rehabilitation on his right knee and looking forward to a promising 2003 season. If all things go as scheduled Fuga said he would be ready to play Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Day.

"The trainers said I could play and it wouldn't affect my eligibility," said Fuga who has two seasons remaining with the Warriors. "It's my decision."

Fuga acknowledged that playing in the bowl game would be a nice Christmas gift but will probably lean toward sitting out the game.

"I don't want to mess up the opportunity for Lance (Samuseva) and Isaac (Sopoaga) but you never know things can change. I may start rehabbing double time."
