Men's Basketball: Rainbows outlast TAMU-CC

There are few flaws to comb through when the home team lights up the scoreboard with 100 points and a 19-point margin of victory. Hawaii's win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was an exercise in balanced scoring and discipline within a run-and-gun tempo.

but he's happy

HONOLULU -- Even a defensive disciple like Riley Wallace had to admit it.

Run and gun basketball is candy for the eyes. For the
University of Hawaii, a 100-81 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was just sweet enough to enjoy Sunday night.

The Rainbow Warriors, with six players in double figures, led by 14 at halftime en route to the Hawaiian Airlines title victory. Haim Shimonovich, with little resistance from smaller foes, scored 18 points on 8 of 10 shooting and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Hawaii (2-0) got plenty of balance on the offensive end. Carl English scored 17 points, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range, and added seven rebounds and six assists with only two turnovers in 36 minutes. English joined Shimonovich on the all-tournament team.

Phil Martin tallied 15 points on 6 of 7 shooting, and reserves Jason Carter and Michael Kuebler stepped in capably.

Phil Martin

Carter, the ultra-quick point guard, scored 12 points. The junior college transfer looked very comfortable in UH's motion offenses and nailed 3 of 4 attempts from the arc. Kuebler tallied 12 points and dished seven assists with no turnovers.

Carter's emergence will be big plus through the long Western Athletic Conference season. Mark Campbell, the starting point guard, dished out nine assists with only one turnover. He added two steals and scored three points. Wallace wants Campbell to remain aggressive offensively.

As a team, UH shot 60 percent from the field (39 of 65), including 10 of 19 from 3-point range. The Rainbows outrebounded
Corpus Christi 33-29 and committed just 12 turnovers. Wallace was happy with his team's 27 assists out of the 39 buckets.

He was less thrilled, however, with his team defense,  noting needed improvement from English and Martin, in particular.

Hawaii trailed 22-21 midway through the first half before going on a 13-3 run. Tony Akpan, who showed a nice shooting touch from the elbow, sparked the run with a basket. Martin, Shimonovich, English and Carter kept the run going, and Hawaii extended the lead to 18 before the end of the half. The Rainbows led 50-36 at the break.

Corpus Christi cut the lead down to 63-52 on Derrick Murphy's basket with 15:15 remaining, but that's as close a margin as the Rainbows allowed. Wallace emptied his bench with two minutes to play.

Freshman walk-on Ikaika Alama-Francis' first point, on the front end of a 1-and-1, pushed UH to the century mark with 28 seconds remaining.

Brian Evans led TAMU-CC with 25 points on 9 of 16 shooting. Murphy added 23 on 9 of 13 shooting. Thomas Bailey and brother Travis Bailey added 12 and 10 points, respectively. As a team, they shot 48 percent from the field (31 of 65).
