Shoji Wins Number 800 in Sweep of Utah

UH Wahine Volleyball Coach Dave Shoji picked up his 800th career win Tuesday night as Hawaii defeated Utah in Three

SALT LAKE CITY - With career win number 800, don't expect University of Hawaii head volleyball coach to retire soon.

"Well I think I'll be here for a while longer as my kids are young and still in school," said Shoji immediately after the match.

His Wahine teams gave him every reason to continue as the Wahine concluded the regular season Tuesday night with a 31-29, 30-16, 30-18 win over 24th ranked Utah.

Kim Willoughby led the way offensively for the Wahine with a match high 18 kills. Lily Kahumoku added 14 kills and Lauren Duggins had 13 kills and 8 stuffs.

Game one was a see saw affair that saw seven lead changes before Hawaii was able to get a block for the 31-29 win. The Wahine were held to a .189 hitting percentage and had nine hitting errors.

Losing that first game seemed to take a little wind out of the Ute sails as Hawaii thoroughly dominated the next two games for the three game sweep.

The key for UH was the ability to get offense from the two middles, Duggins and Gustin, which didn't allow the Utah blockers to cheat to the outside. Once Hawaii established a middle attack, it forced the Utes to play more straight up defense and gave better scoring opportunities for Willoughby and Kahumoku.

Hawaii finished the match with a .298 hitting percentage to Utah's .124 and out blocked the Ute's 11-7.5

At 30-1 overall, Hawaii, ranked No. 2 in the latest Coaches Poll, will likely get one of the coveted top four national seeds which gives them a chance to host both the first and second rounds as well as the regionals.
