Volleyball Game Notes: Hawaii vs. Western Kentucky

The road to the Final Four begins tonight for the Wahine as they open up NCAA Tournament play against Western Kentucky.



WESTERN KENTUCKY (33-4) – Nickname is Lady Toppers….Won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title…Went undefeated in conference (14-0)…..Making first ever appearance in the NCAA Tourney….Lead Nation in wins….Have won 19 straight matches….Have played only one Tournament team, Cincinnati, winning in three….Went 11-0 on the road and 12-3 at neutral sites….Are a perfect 6-0 when a match goes five games….Setter Sara Noe and MB Amanda Schiff were named first team All-Sun Belt Conference….Noe was also the Conference Player of the Year….Libero Tracy May is the Defensive Player of the Year and Travis Hudson is the Coach of the Year….Amanda Schiff leads the team in kills per game (3.60)….Tracy May averages 4.26 digs per game….Noe dishes out 13.48 assist per game…Team leader in blocks per game is Cynda Derbort with 0.79….Have a .251 team hitting percentage….Have face Hawaii twice, both times coming in 1987 when the Wahine beat the Lady Toppers in three.



HAWAII (30-1) – The number six national seed despite being ranked second in the coaches poll….Bracketed in the Central Regional….4-1 against teams that were ranked in the Top 25 at the time….WAC regular season and tournament champions…..Went 13-0 in conference play….Have appeared in 21 of the 22 NCAA Tournaments….1992 is the only year that UH did not see post season action….Hold a 46-17 overall tournament record….Captured the NCAA title in 1982, 83 and 87….Have advanced to six Final Four's, last one coming in 2000….Wahine are first nationally in several statistical categories….assist per game (16.65), team hitting percentage (.344), Kills per game (18.15)….Individually, Kim Willoughby is second in the country in kills per game at 6.33 and seventh in aces per game with 0.75….Lauren Duggins is eighth in hitting percentage (.408)….Dave Shoji recorded his 800th career victory in Hawaii's last regular season match at Utah….Only the fourth coach to ever reach that milestone.


The other first round match pits Washington (19-10) of the Pac-10 conference against Mountain West Conference regular season champion Colorado State (22-9). The winner's of the first round matches will face each other on Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
