Wahine Basketball: Fall to Owls on the road

Owls continue their home court dominance of Hawaii with four point win.

HOUSTON--Hawaii got off to a quick start but ran out of gas in a 54-50 loss to Rice Thursday night at Autry Court. Lindsey Maynard scored six points down the stretch for the Owls to prevent the Rainbow Wahine from picking up their first road win of the season.

UH (11-6, 5-3 WAC) remain winless on the road in three games and have yet to beat the Owls in five trips to Autry Court. Defense ruled again in the meeting as the two team combined for 13 blocks, 18 steals and just 104 combined points.

Maynard though proved the wild card. With the game tied at 48-48, the junior guard hit a layup with a little more than two minutes left to break the tie. The junior guard then converted one free throw to give Rice (7-10, 4-4) a three-point lead. Christen Roper's hook shoot with 1:38 remaining made it a one-point game. But on Rice's next possession, Maynard hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down to seal the win.

Maynard and Rosyland Jefferies led Rice with 10 points each. Roper and Natasja Allen paced UH with 10 points apiece. Kim Willoughby added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Rainbow Wahine.

In a place they have historically struggled, the Rainbow Wahine got off to an impressive start, scoring the first seven points of the game. Meanwhile, the Owls missed 10 of their first 11 shots from the field, and posted just two points eight minutes in. The Rainbow Wahine capitalized and took a double-digit lead. Willoughby provided a spark with seven points and six rebounds in the first frame.

However, foul trouble soon plagued UH as Christen Roper and Jade Abele hit the bench. A once 10-point lead vanished as Rice recovered and outscored UH 16-7 in the final seven minutes of the half to make it a one-point game, 25-24, at the break.

The second half proved a battle. There were two ties and eight lead changes in the second half. Rice took a three-point lead early in the second half, but UH regained the lead and led by as many four points with less than seven minutes in the game. Rice however went on an 8-3 run in the final five minutes to win the game.

The Rainbow Wahine next travel to Tulsa where they will take on a Golden Hurricane squad that stands in second place in the WAC with a 6-2 record. Tipoff is set for 10 a.m. Hawaii time.
