Carl English leads Hawaii to 15 point victory over Rice.

HONOLULU - On the same night Hawai'i guard Carl English became the 10th player in school history to score 1,000 career points, his Rainbow Warriors routed Rice, 85-70, Thursday, at the Stan Sheriff Center. English needed 30 points to reach the milestone and he got just that as the 'Bows snapped a three-game Western Athletic Conference losing streak to improve to 12-5, 5-4 in league play.

The preseason WAC player of the year had 19 in the first half and missed just three shots from the field all night. Guard Michael Kuebler added 18 points while center Haim Shimonovich and forward Phil Martin each posted double-doubles. Shimonovich had 10 points and 11 rebounds to record his third of the season, while Martin had 13 and 11 for his first of the year.

Hawai'i extended its home winning streak to 23 games, tying Duke for the fourth longest in the country. The 'Bows are just three short of the school-record 26-game win streak set from 1971-73. UH shot 54.5 percent (30-55) from the field and out-rebounded Rice, 39-to-28.

UH used a 13-0 run midway through the first half to break open a one-point ball game. Kuebler started the spurt with a trey in the left corner to give the 'Bows a 22-21 lead. Consecutive English lay-ups capped the five-minute run to put
Hawai'i ahead 32-21 with 7:38 left. The 'Bows led by as many as 17 in the period after a Kuebler lay-up put UH up 46-29 at the 2:32 mark.

Hawai'i continued its dominance in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the field (11-22). With the 'Bows holding a 67-55 lead with 7:14 to play, the Owls made one final attempt to get back in the game. A 7-1 run, spurred by an Omar-Seli Mance trey and Jason McKrieth bucket closed the deficit to 68-62 with 5:10 remaining. But Hawai'i answered right back with seven unanswered points to push the lead back into double figures.

Mance led all Rice scorers with 20 points. Forward Michael Harris came off the bench to score 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

The 'Bows next host
Tulsa, Saturday, in a game dubbed "White-Out." Fans are encouraged to wear a white shirt. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Sheriff Center. The Golden Hurricane (11-6, 4-4 WAC) suffered a 58-57 setback at San Jose State, Thursday.
