Warrior Volleyball: Fall in three to Anteaters

The Men of War get beat in three by top ranked UC Irvine.

Irvine, CA. - A night after getting handled by second-ranked Hawaii, top-ranked UC Irvine bounced back to help the series between the top two teams in the country live up to its billing, out-blocking and out-hitting the visiting Warriors, 30-20, 30-26, 30-25 before a capacity crowd of 700 at Crawford Hall.

UC Irvine came-out of the gates much looser in the series finale, hitting .382 after being limited to a .237 attack percentage in the opener. The Anteaters remained the aggressor during the contest, taking advantage of cozy Crawford Hall and its odd environment. Crawford features white interior walls, fluorescent lighting and a low ceiling that was in play. The Anteaters were aggressive on defense as well, out-blocking the Warriors , 15.5 to 5.

Hawaii sophomore sensation Delano Thomas remained hot, hitting .615, with nine kills in 13 attempts to lead all attackers. The 2002 Volleyball magazine All-Freshman honoree also posted a team-high three blocks. Thomas helped the Warriors rip-off a few rallies with his play at the net.

The top-ranked Anteaters parlayed what was
Hawaii's worst single game performance of the year into a game one win. Hawaii misplayed itself into a quick 4-0 deficit to open the action, due to a combination of miscommunication on defense and a lack of rhythm in their offense. Warrior coach Wilton called the match's first timeout at that point, with UCI out-hitting Hawaii, 1.000 to negative .500. Irvine recorded three of their first six points on blocks, as the Warriors struggled to find each other at the right times. Hawaii had just 10 kills with seven attack errors in 27 swings to register a .111 hitting percentage. Irvine's Spencer Bemus enjoyed his finest game of the series, notching nine kills on 10 attempts to lead all players. Warrior middle Thomas, hot-off a career-high 17 kills last night, received just three attack opportunities in the game.

In game two the Warriors looked a little more like them selves, but still seemed out of sorts at times.
Hawaii made a run midway through the frame, catching UC Irvine at 13 apiece after trailing 12-9. A service error by UCI ace Jimmy Pelzel, a Hawaii triple block, an Eyal Zimet kill and a free ball kill by Joshua Stanhiser drew the Warriors even. The second game's final deadlock came at 16-16, before the Anteaters pulled-away for the 30-26 victory. Senior outside hitter Tony Ching gave Hawaii a boost, recording six kills in nine attempts in the set. The Warriors got on track offensively, hitting .357, but were still blocked five times in the game, to give Irvine nine at that juncture.

In game three
Hawaii coach Mike Wilton inserted freshman Pedro Azenha at one outside hitter spot. Azenha gave the Warriors an early boost, recording two kills in as many attempts and a service ace to give his team a 7-4 lead. Irvine pulled-away once again in the third game despite the best efforts of Thomas. With Hawaii trailing 27-20, Thomas recorded three straight points on a block solo and a pair of kills to pull the Warriors within three. But the Anteaters stormed back to capture the game and the match, 30-25.

The "Men of War" will continue their first road trip of the season with another conference series at No. 5 Long Beach State.
Hawaii will play the 49ers on Wednesday Feb. 5 and Friday Feb. 7, with both matches beginning at 5:30 p.m. Hawaii time.
