Mens Basketball: Bows win in OT over Tulsa

Hawaii blows large first half lead and then wins in overtime.

HONOLULU - The first battle between the defending Western Athletic Conference's regular season co-champions, Hawai'i and Tulsa, went to the Rainbow Warriors, 73-67, in overtime, Saturday night, in the second annual "White-Out" at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH improved to 13-5, 6-4 in WAC play and extended its home winning streak to 24 games, two shy of the school record.

Both teams shared the conference title last year and met in the WAC Tournament title game, but are struggling in league play this season. However, the game still exemplified the Hawai'i/Tulsa rivalry as the Golden Hurricane (11-7, 4-5 WAC) erased a 12-point halftime deficit to force overtime.

Carl English scored a game-high 28 points, with the help of a career-high eight 3-pointers, to lead the 'Bows past
Tulsa for the fifth straight time. English, the WAC's leading scorer, poured in 15 points at the half. Phil Martin added 16 points and six rebounds and Haim Shimonovich posted his second straight double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

Jason Parker led
Tulsa with 22 points but his lay-up with 19.2 seconds left tied the game at 60. Hawaii had a chance to win it but Mark Campbell lost control of the ball while driving to the hoop as time expired. In overtime, Parker's jumper in the lane put the Hurricane ahead 62-60, but UH scored the next eight points, including English's eighth 3-pointer, to take a commanding six-point lead. Tulsa closed the gap to three after a Jarius Glenn trey with :47.9 remaining. But Campbell iced the victory with a breakaway lay-up with :12.7 left.

All-WAC forward Kevin Johnson scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Hurricane. Down the stretch, the senior came up big scoring three big buckets in the final
3:35 after Tulsa had connected on just one field goal during an eight-minute stretch. Glenn added 12 points and six boards off the bench.

The 'Bows came out firing in the first half as English had four treys midway through the period. UH controlled the boards, out-rebounding
Tulsa, 25-to-12, which created 11 second chance points. Hawai'i took its largest lead of 15 after a Vaidotas Peciukas layup put the 'Bows ahead 33-18 with 3:41 remaining.

The second half belonged to
Tulsa. A 10-2 run through the first media timeout shrunk the Hawai'i lead to two, 42-40. The Golden Hurricane took its first lead of the game after consecutive Johnson baskets put Tulsa ahead 46-45 with 12:23 remaining. During a seven-minute stretch, the teams combined to connect on one basket, a Martin dunk with 7:35 which put the 'Bows ahead 53-50. A Kuebler trey from the top of the key gave UH a 56-50 lead but Tulsa answered with back-to-back Johnson baskets and a Parker breakaway lay-up.

The 'Bows next head for a week-long road trip to Ruston, La., and Dallas, Texas for games against Louisiana Tech, Feb. 6 and SMU, Feb. 8.
