Interview With Coach Joe Curl

"I take it personally when we don't do well, so I'm going do what I have to get our girls ready to go. We might be angry enough to go 30-2 !!!!! Our new recruits will help out tremendously, and make us a better squad." - Joe Curl

I was able to track down Coach Curl at the Junior College National Tournament. He is one of those coaches who is truly an ambassador to our university, and I for one, feel that we are lucky to have him running our women's Basketball program.

Please enjoy the interview…

CR: Coach, how are you doing these days?
JC: I'm working like a dog, Chris. I'm very disappointed and upset about this past season. But you know what, we will come back stronger next year.

CR: Coach, in looking at the stats, opponents averaged 64 point per game last year v. 70 points per game this year. Rebounds, blocks, and three point attempts were all down. What happened?
JC: We lost Valerie Muenoke, and we could never regain that toughness. We lost two players earlier in the year, and I did not replace them like I wanted. We were inconsistent across the board, and I feel I did not do a good job. I let the team down.

CR: The team's highest winning streak was only 4 games this year, what happened there?
JC: Our inconsistency killed us. We would have girls play well one night, and not the next. Inconsistency all around killed us.

CR: Coach it seems like the teams took care of business with the out of conference schedule, mainly Texas A & M, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida, what happened in CUSA play?
JC: It's very puzzling. We beat TCU out of the gate, and could never really get on track. Not to mention CUSA was getting tougher. Look how many good teams made post-season play, without us….

CR: How was the team's mindset this year, after the NIT run last year?
JC: We expected to win this year. Teams played us harder, and CUSA was stronger this ar. But we didn't do what we had to do. But I'll tell you what, we are going to work our butts off next year, and we will be stronger. We have two girls over 6-4 coming in, and one girl at 6-2.

CR: Coaches have seasons from hell and seasons sent from God, how would you rate this past year?
JC: It was definitely challenging. I made some mistakes during the year, and the girls made some mistakes. Would I do some things differently, sure I would. But I promise you we will be stronger next year.

CR: Coach, what can you tell us about next year?
JC: Like I said earlier, we are going to work our butts off. I take it personally when we don't do well, so I'm going do what I have to get our girls ready to go. We might be angry enough to go 30-2 !!!!! Our new recruits will help out tremendously, and make us a better squad.

I want Cougar fans to know how much I appreciate their support. They are smart fans because they know what it takes to build a program. I really appreciate their support.

CR: Coach we are the ones who are appreciative of your efforts. You are the epitome of everything we Cougars want in a head coach. We are luck to have you. You have shown strong enough faith in the U of H to come here, and allow your daughters to come here, and hopefully we can allow you to retire a Cougar. Thank you for your love of our program and our fine university, Coach.
JC: Thank you for the fine words, Chris. You know I love the U of H.

Coach, we love you being here. And I'm pretty sure I speak for all Cougars when I say that we are proud of the job you are doing and we proud you are leading our women's basketball program.
