Interview with Cougar Softball Coach: Kyla Holas

"We are very confident in our future and look forward to next year and the goals we still need to accomplish." - Kyla Holas

Cougar Softball Coach Kyla Holas took time out to give CoogFans a little information regarding this past record-setting softball season.

Please enjoy!

CR: Coach congratulations on a wonderful year! How are the girls feeling knowing they can play with the best teams in the country? i.e. LSU, South Florida and Texas?
KH: We are very confident in our future and look forward to next year and the goals we still need to accomplish.

CR: Is the program where you want it? Or are we still missing a piece to the puzzle?
KH: We are still a few steps away. A big transfer or pitcher would move the process along quicker.

CR: It seems the girls were a little slow coming out of the gate, but at the halfway point of the season, they really turned it on and won some big games. Why the slow start?
KH: We had to find the right nine on the field and it took some time for those players to step up and play together.

CR: Coach, they say that records are made to be broken. Your team shattered the home run record for our conference. How did the girls feel about that?
KH: It was something we have wanted to do from the beginning. We have made our program very offensive sided and those goals are what we pride ourselves in breaking.

CR: Arelis Ferreris, has been the rock for this team, in my opinion. Tell us how you convinced her to come to UH, which was a program in its infancy.
KH: Ray was very huge to our success in the beginning and she has continued to be a leader for this team. It was pure fate that I saw her play and once we had a commitment to a visit we sealed the deal by building a relationship and place she felt comfortable in.

CR: Coach what can you tell me about Kristen Glowacz? She's only a sophomore, and already tough as nails.
KH: Kristen is our team MVP and a real huge reason to our offensive success. We expect her to only get better and All-American honors to follow.

CR: Coach, you return nine starters next year. What can we expect from the softball team next year?
KH: Our goal from day one has been CUSA Championship, Regional and WCWS. We were one day from making those goals a reality. Expect a very hungry team and a sad senior day.

CR: What parts of the team do you think need improving? The team had a batting average of .269. Where would you like to see it?
KH: We would love to hit over .300 as a team, but the secret to our future success is our defense and pitching. Should we be able to reduce the number of fielding errors and homeruns given up we would win more of those close games.

Thanks for the update Coach.
