Watson Thrilled To Be An Eagle

Southern Miss baseball continues to stockpile talent as they work toward their goal of getting back to Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series. OF/ Corner IF Will Watson of Neville HS in Monroe, Louisiana is one of the Letters of Intent the Eagles have received over the past few days. He talks about his decision to be inked with the Eagles in this interview with GoldenEaglePride.com.

Will Watson is a talented prospect from Neville High School in Monroe, Louisiana. He committed to the Eagles back in the summer, and now he has a lot to look forward to as his signature is in and sealed with Southern Miss.

For now though, Watson said the focus for him is going to be getting his football team back to the state championship.

"I play wide receiver for my high school, and we are undefeated and are about to play in the semi finals," he said. "I'm trying to finish out with a state championship. I have no intentions of playing football at the next level, but I just felt like they needed me so I stuck it out."

He said two weeks ago he picked up a bat and started hitting some to start gearing up for his final year of baseball.

He's eager to get baseball season underway, but he's even more eager to get to Hattiesburg and play baseball for the Golden Eagles.

"It is an exciting moment for me," he said. "I've always wanted to play college baseball, and I felt like Southern Miss gave me the best chance to get to the College World Series.

"I feel like it was the best decision I could make."

Watson said his decision was based on the program itself, the coaching staff, and the plans they had for him as a part of the program.

"They want me to play one of the corner infield positions and said I could play outfield as well, or wherever they feel like I could fit in," he said.

"I can contribute and am looking forward to helping the team. I love Coach Calliet and feel like he can really help my game so much. Coach Berry is so down to earth and he is very real and tells you the truth.

"I just love the coaches and players there that I met when I visited. It made the decision for me."

Watson said he's also very excited about the group of players who will be around him from previous classes and his current one.

"I heard of that class two years ago, and I'm glad this one will have great potential as well," he said. "It is a prestigious school and program, and its an honor to even play there.

"When they started talking to me I was amazed because I know they get in the best in the southeast. It is an honor, no doubt."

Watson's signature is one of several that have been coming in over the past few days for the class of 2013 in the early signing period. Stick with GoldenEaglePride.com for all the latest.
