Recruiting Story: Johnson talks UH

Now that the 2014 college football season is over, spring practice and recruiting has taken over the landscape. Although the Cougars currently do not have anyone committed for their 2016 class, one name they have reached out to and offered is DE Michael Johnson.

The 3-star defensive end from Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas currently has offers from Louisiana Tech, Texas Tech, Nevada, and Washington. The talented defender also says he has interest from a lot of schools including a couple in the state of Texas.

TCU, Texas are Texas A&M are other schools that have interest in me, and that’s just in Texas.” Johnson said.

Johnson says he has already taken a couple of visits already this month, and was hosted by Assistant Head Coach and Special Teams Coach Craig Naivar.

“The first visit we just went around and took a tour of everything. The second visit we watched film, I attended a team meeting. The second visit was supposed to be the first practice, but they canceled the first practice because it was raining.” Johnson said. “We just walked around campus, and I saw a couple of faces I knew.”

The faces Johnson is talking about are his former high school teammates that are currently Houston Cougar football players. Linebacker Matthew Adams, and safeties Khalil and Joeal Williams.

Johnson says the interest at UH occurred when Coach Naivar, who was at Kentucky at the time, spent a lot of time contacting the defensive end.

“Coach Naivar was at Kentucky last year and told me that he was going to come get me. It happened last year when I was on offensive at the time, and I was thinking it was a game.” Johnson said.  “A couple months ago he came when coaches can speak to the recruits again after the dead period. He came to the school, and he told me that he was at UH. Then two or three weeks later he messaged me on twitter saying call me I’ve got some life changing news for you, and then he offered me.”

Johnson says he is starting to become more familiar with the current Cougars team, but he watched this past season’s Armed Forces Bowl game win against Pittsburgh.

“Only game that I watched last season really was the bowl game, and watching that comeback, and I don’t know too many faces on the team.” Johnson said. “I knew the runningback Kenneth Farrow. I saw him run over the defender from Pittsburgh in the bowl game.”

Johnson says he plans on taking his time before announcing who he plans on committing to.

“It depends. I hope to have my offers on the table by the end of the summer, and if that’s not the case I’m just going to wait until Signing Day.”

Johnson also says that there are currently no leaders for his services.

“Everyone is on an equal playing field.” The three-star says.

Johnson says he tries to be aggressive when it comes to his playing style.

“I make sure that I’m an explosive, and cerebral player. Similar to how Kobe Bryant attacks the basketball, and how J.J. Watt attacks the football. I try and combine those two mentalities and try to put them together with my own game.” Johnson says.

Johnson says the next thing he plans to do is make a Houston Cougar’s practice since he wasn’t able this month due to the weather.
