The Houston Cougars announced new head coach Major Applewhite's hiring Friday morning after a nearly two week search following the departure of Tom Herman for the same job with the Texas Longhorns.
Shortly after the Cougars' announcement reaction began to come out, specifically from some of the Cougars' 18 verbal commitments. Quarterback commit Bryson Smith's camp was quickly on record as to his feelings on the hire:
In addition to those two early supporters of the move, Cougar Digest has begun to receive feedback from many of the remaining commits.
Huffman offensive tackle commit Dennis Bardwell confirmed he was visited by the very newly named head coach at 9:45 Friday morning.
"It's made me excited honestly, " Bardwell said when asked about the hire. "My whole family was rooting for him, great guy."
Katy tight end commit Parker Eichenberger, who has had a noticeable uptick in attention from other schools since Herman's departure also shared his thoughts on the Cougars' hiring of Applewhite.
"It makes me a lit less likely to want to leave," he said Friday afternoon. "I know they will be running the same offense and have a use for me and that is what I wanted most in a school."
Eichenberber also confirmed he has an in-home visit with Cougars interim tight ends coach James Casey set for Friday night.
