The Houston Cougars new coaching staff had very little time to catch their breath after being assembled. The 2017 recruiting cycle was coming to a close and the staff still had plenty of work to finish before last week's National Signing Day which pretty much wrapped up the majority of the work for that cycle.
There was little time for celebrations and even less to catch their breath's as the new staff hosted some of the top targets in the 2018 recruiting class at their first Junior Day for the new crop of recruiting targets. One local standout that stopped by TDECU Stadium, after competing at Saturday morning's Nike The Opening regional in west Houston, was Conroe (TX) Oak Ridge defensive standout Joseph Ossai.
Ossai isn't exactly a sleeper prospect at this stage, the Cougars appear to have been his fifteenth offer joining Baylor, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Colorado and a host of others.
Ossai was offered by the Cougars staff at the junior day on Saturday, and in addition to new defensive line coach A.J. Blum (who appears to be running point in Ossai's recruitment) the Cougar will have some additional help in their corner. One of the players the new staff was able to offer and land a signature from last Wednesday was Oak Ridge senior defender Grant Stuard.
The Cougars like Ossai's potential to play their buck outside linebacker position, one most recently played by rising NFL Draft prospect Tyus Bowser.
Ossai was a first team All District selection, along side Stuard, for District 12-6A in 2016. He had 46 tackles, including 8.5 sacks as a junior.
