Southern Miss Preview

USM enters Hofheinz tonight after a 73-64 home loss to Memphis last Saturday. Sr. forward Elvin Mims is one of the most dangerous players in C-USA and will present UH with unique challenges. Before the Memphis game, USM lost to Tulane by nine but beat UH's most recent opponent (UAB) by 14.

UH's Louis Truscott is coming off of an awesome week as he was named the C-USA player of the week. All five UH starters average double figures in scoring, and the team leads the C-USA in shooting percentage. The Coogs have won three straight, including conference wins over TCU and UAB.

Elvin Mims continues to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring. He's now at 19.2 points a game, after turning in his second highest scoring game of the season with 29 off the bench against Memphis. That average currently is the fifth best scoring average in Conference USA. Mims has been in double figures in 12 of the 13 games in which he has played. He has a season-best of 33 points and has six, 20-point-plus games. Note: Mims is arguably the best player that UH has faced this year. He has a very versatile inside/outside game is tough to guard.

Clement Carter is the only other Southern Miss player in double figures. He's at 10.7 points a game.

Southern Miss leads the series with Houston 9-6, and has won nine of the last 10 games the two teams have played, including both games last season, 62-58 in Houston, and 72-51 in Hattiesburg. Only two teams have scored more than 76 points against the Eagles this year.

USM is 4-4 when Mims leads the team in scoring.

Mims was suspended indefinitely following the Auburn game, and did not play in either the Memphis or the South Florida game. He was suspended for an on-court violation of team rules but has since been reinstated.
