UH Golf falls to fifth at US Collegiate

Hermis, Robinson remain among Top 10 individual leaders.

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Houston golf team endured heavy winds Saturday and stood in fifth place after 36 holes at the U.S. Collegiate Championships.

After posting the second best team score during the first round, the Cougars recorded a team score of 301 on Saturday to stand 13 strokes behind Texas. Oklahoma State and Arizona tied for second at 577 with Arizona State standing in fourth at 580.

Although the Cougar individual scores went up Saturday, two linksters remained among the top 10 individual leaders. Kevin Hermis, who opened the tournament with a career-best 66, posted a score of 73 and stood in fifth place with a score of 139.

Junior Simon Robinson shot a 77 on Saturday and tied for 10th with a 36-hole score of 144.

Other UH golfers were Brad McIntosh (149, t-29th), John Wine (150, t-32nd) and Brett Callas (152, t-40th).

Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State, who fired a 62 in the first round, remained atop the leaderboard at 135, two strokes ahead of John Klauk of Texas.

With gusts on the course up to 35 mph, only six individuals posted six sub-par rounds on the day.
