ARDMORE, Okla. – One day after setting a new career low round, University of Houston sophomore golfer Brett Callas continued his hot play with an even lower round on the way to capturing the individual championship at The Maxwell on Sunday.
Callas, who stood in fourth place entering the final 18 holes Sunday, fired a career-best 67 in the final round to finish two strokes ahead of John Kidwell (Oklahoma), Kyle Willmann (Texas Tech) and Cody Freeman (Oklahoma). It was the best finish by a Cougar linkster this season, topping Simon Robinson's third-place finish at the Conference USA Championships on April 22-24.
The Cougars, who will next compete at the NCAA Central Regional in Little Rock, Ark., on May 16-18, maintained their hold on second place in the final team standings, finishing four strokes behind Oklahoma State. Oklahoma, Texas and Tulsa rounded out the top five team leaders.
UH also posted its seventh top-10 team finish and the fifth top-10 finish in their last six tournaments. It was also the Cougars' second straight second-place finish after capturing runner-up honors at the C-USA Championships.
Callas' performance was part of a solid effort by the entire Cougar team which had three players finish among the top 10 individual leaders. Simon Robinson, who earned All-C-USA and C-USA All-Tournament Team honors recently tied for sixth with a score of 2-over-par 210 and joined Callas as the only Cougars to improve their scores with each round.
Brad McIntosh finished in a tie for ninth at 4-over-par 214.
Other Cougars competing in the tournament were Scott Ferguson (T-53rd, 230) and Chris Cureton (60th, 235).
