Jake Ebner - The Straight Story

"...we are moving in the right direction, just one at a time...we have the talent, we just need to improve on all the little things that bite you in the butt...so it all starts now...but we are going to be at whatever level you call the next level...because we dont play around, the coogs mean business in 06." - Jake Ebner

Jake Ebner takes a few moments to answer questions for our readers here at CoogFans.

DD- Jake, thanks for taking some time with me today. Tell us was there ever any doubt as to where you would go to school as your dad was a former football letterman?
JE - ok so here goes...1st with the school of choice... my commitment with UH had nothing to do with my father, he stayed out of the whole recruiting process...i chose UH bc i though briles could turn it around...i also wanted to be close to home bc my hobbies outside football inculde the outdoors which im so close to here...and mostly the business school and its prestige...

DD – On a similar theme, is your younger brother a prospect?
JE - i have 2 younger brothers, the middle isnt playing football but is going to UH on an academic scholarship...the youngest has potential but needs to prove himself in high school before he looks ahead...but in my opinion he could be very good...

DD – Jake, what's your height, weight, strength numbers and 40 time these days?
JE - height is 6'2" weight 275...i lost a few due to the position change and new focus due to excellent strength and conditioning program...in my opinion my body is not where i want it to be so i will have new motivation for summer workouts...dont know my lifts and times sorry...we havent tested...

DD - Please give us an update on your current position with the team and how you are adjusting to your potential role as the starting center a year from now?
JE - currently i am playing a minor role as basically a blocking back...a little slot, little fullback and a little tight end...not much for getting the ball, maybe once every now and then...im happy for several reasons...i never came to UH wanting to be a back up and i feel like i have wasted my first two years of eligibility so the change gives me the potential to see the field and compete...it may be a flaw of mine but i dont take losing very well, whether its grades, video games, or athletics...im not looking ahead at the center spot im trying to be the best for the team now...but i know it wont be easy to put the weight back on in the right way...the old workout and diet didnt help me to keep off unwanted body fat...if i am going to be 300 i dont want to be a sloppy 300, i want to be in shape and built the right way...

DD - How difficult has it been with the process of waiting your turn going into your third season now and how different do you see your role as compared to the previous season?
JE - well relating to a previous question...i dont want to comment on the previous years as a backup...i dont want to compare...whether i was happy or not, good or not, i have to put it behind me and keep my focus on my schoolwork and then football...a stupid situation like that for someone so fortunate to even have a scholarship is pathetic to be complaining about...you got to look at the walk-ons and the guys who bust their rears for no financial help...they do it because they love the game and because they have something to work for...a lot of people take that for granted, but its ok, maybe they will count their blessings one day soon...

DD – Any surprises in store from you as far as possible alternate playing positions for '06?
JE - ok the surprises for 06, no more than what i have mentioned...i think i have a chance to show my athleticism at these positions and maybe one day i'll prove myself to the rest of the coog family and establish myself as a solid cougar football player...but its a work in progress...and who knows where ill be...life takes you places and you just have to adjust and keep moving...so thats where im at now..

DD – Tell us about the OL for next season?
JE - as for the offensive line...we have a great group of guys...people want to put us down...well go ahead, tell them to come play against us...we work our tail off and have a close knit group of soldiers...we fight...we might not be 6'8" (except for sebastian haha) and 350 pounds with a 4.4 40, but we fight, and we work with what weve got...we dont have time to pout over a shortage...we wont let the coogs down, and thats because we are proud to be in the trenches...so for any fans, we fight for houston, and thats what we do.

DD - What needs to be done to get us to the next level?
JE - to get us to the next level...we are on the way...i dont comment on changes in the hierarchy because thats none of my business...we are making big movements in academics first of all...then we have a new light with our strength and conditioning which helps to cure all discipline related problems...then in my mind, we need to show people the fight in the coogs...we need the support because thats a huge motivator for us...we want to do it for houston, but houston has to be in it with us...our coaches are doin a great job of bustin their butts to get us on the right track and so is mr maggard...we are moving in the right direction, just one at a time...we have the talent, we just need to improve on all the little things that bite you in the butt...so it all starts now...but we are going to be at whatever level you call the next level...because we dont play around, the coogs mean business in 06...

sorry for the choppy and short responses but i just wanted to answer you in an honest, to the point way...thanks for the opportunity to give some output to the readers of coogfans.com. jake
