UH Cougars First 9-1 Start in 15 Years

Cougars Extend Eight Game Winning Streak with First 9-1 Start in 15 Years

UH Cougar men's basketball continued their winning season at Hofheinz Pavilion on Saturday night by cruising past Southern University with a final score of 73-49. Thanks in no small part to a stellar performance from Dion Dowell , who hit six three pointers and finished with 24 points overall. Cougars led 35-20 at the half with Dowell contributing 19 of those points. Dowell's strong defensive play also included five blocked shots and 10 rebounds. Penders noted that one big change in the way Dowell plays ball this year is how he delivers much stronger on his defensive performance.

Key contributions also included Robert McKiver and Kelvin Lewis , with 15 and 14 point respectively, along with Zamal Nixon , who finished with nine points and Tafari Toney with eight. Penders noted major differences in this game versus the Toledo win were lower turnovers (eight versus 20) and stronger overall team defense.

During the post game wrap, when questioned about tying Guy V. Lewis' career win total of 592, Penders commented that Guy V. is in a class of his own for making UH basketball great. And said what he wanted to be remembered for is restoring the program as well as strengthening the competitiveness of UH basketball going forward.
