RECENTLY IDAHO ATHLETICS DIRECTOR ROB SPEAR talked with GoVandals.net to discuss the arena project launched after meeting with Idaho's Regents in February. UI is in the silent phase of a $30 MILLION project that will build a new basketball facility which addresses new game-day, practice, and convention space needs for the program, and provides a long-awaited dedicated home for Vandal basketball.

IDAHO'S SENIOR SHOOTING GUARD CONNOR HILL hit some big shots Thursday night to help the Vandals beat Montana 92-87 in double overtime, but none were more clutch than the back-breaking trey he scored after Mike Scott's missed jumper bounced out to Hill with 1:18 left in the second OT, giving Idaho an 87-81 lead. The teams battled to the wire, but the deficit was too much for the Griz to overcome.

BEHIND SENIOR POINT GUARD Mike Scott, who led all scorers with 23, Idaho built a 20+ point lead in the Cowan Spectrum only to watch it evaporate in the final five minutes of Saturday's Big Sky match-up against Northern Colorado. Idaho struggled at the line, shooting just 58%, which aided the Bears comeback effort. But Scott, Connor Hill and Sekou Wiggs all hit late free throws for the 83-79 win.

Since the 1960s Idaho has considered multiple basketball arena designs. No UI AD has pushed this facility more than Rob Spear since taking over in 2004. In the last decade at least four proposals have been considered. We’ve waited for this project to become a University of Idaho priority, and now new President “Chuck” Staben must end the talking and take meaningful steps to get an arena built.

IDAHO REDSHIRT FRESHMAN quarterback MATT LINEHAN got the starting nod Saturday night against ULM in a Sun Belt Conference matchup, and very nearly walked away with the win. Idaho battled back from a 10-point deficit at the start the 4th quarter to tie the game at 31-31 with 4:22 remaining. But with just 9 seconds left in the game the Warhawks punched it in for the go-ahead score and a 38-31 win.

For over four decades the University of Idaho has discussed construction of a new Events Center as the home for Men’s and Women’s Basketball. As we’ve chronicled in recent months, progress is being made on the development of this project, which has focused heavily on far more than just a game-day structure, emphasizing the overall needs of player development and basketball operations.

THE VANDAL MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM got hot late in the season, but it wasn't enough to propel them to a victory over New Mexico State in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament championship game on ESPN-U. Idaho was led by senior Stephen Madison, the program's second all-time leading scorer, who finished with 17 points Saturday night, and junior guard MIKE SCOTT who added 14 points.
