Ledbetter named WAC Player of the Week

IDAHO SENIOR GUARD JEFF LEDBETTER HIT THE OVERTIME 3-POINT BUZZER BEATER SATURDAY NIGHT at Cal State Bakersfield that propelled Idaho into second place in the WAC standings and an 11-6 (4-1 WAC) record. This week he becomes the first Vandal of the 2010-11 season to be named WAC Player of the Week, his first recognition for this honor in his career at Idaho.

DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference honored Idaho senior Jeff Ledbetter on Monday as its Verizon Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 10-16 after he helped lead Idaho to a 2-0 record against Nevada and Cal State Bakersfield.

Ledbetter, a second-year Vandal from Brea, Calif. (Irvine Valley CC), scored 17 points, with three assists and three steals in the 72-67 victory over Nevada on Wednesday at the Cowan Spectrum. He hit four of his eight field goal attempts and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the game.

He upped the ante on Saturday when he scored 13 points, with three more steals and two assists in the overtime road win at Cal State Bakersfield. With Idaho trailing, 77-75, and the clock winding down, Ledbetter stepped back and drained a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Vandals a 78-77 victory.

He shot .500 (9-18) from the field and .545 (6-11) from 3-point range during the week, with 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists per game.

Ledbetter also stepped it up on the defensive end during the week. He had three steals on consecutive possessions late in the first half against Nevada and scored seven straight points during the same span to put the Vandals ahead at the break, then grabbed three more steals, including one late in the overtime period that led to a fast-break layup, at CSUB.

The honor is the first of Ledbetter's career and the first for an Idaho player this season.

Idaho (12-6, 5-1 WAC) will be back in Moscow this Saturday night, when they host in-state rival Boise State (11-7, 4-2 WAC) at 7 p.m. PST in the Cowan Spectrum.
