SIGNING DAY: Vandals add 17 recruits

NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT DAY was a day loaded with surprises for Vandal fans as the second year staff under head coach Paul Petrino hauled in athletes from coast to coast. Of the 17 recruits signed Wednesday - most poised to make an immediate impact this fall - nine will be joining the program from the junior college ranks, taking the class to 25 with the eight JC recruits signed in December.

Typically it takes years to determine how good a recruiting class really is. But this Idaho recruiting class under 2nd year head coach Paul Petrino is heavy on the junior college ranks (nine junior college athletes signed Wednesday will join eight mid-year signees already on campus), and has been brought in to fill voids immediately across the board.

Look for many in this class to play a prominent role for the Vandals this fall.

Cornerback Dennis Rufus
Standouts among the junior college signees that will garner early attention include JC All-American cornerback Dennis Rufus, 3-star wide receiver Kenny Torrance, 6-foot-4 wide receiver Jermaine Johnson, 6-foot-2, 250-pound 1,000 yard rusher Elijhaa Penny, and 6-foot-5, 350-pound defensive tackle Alfonso Hampton, ranked by ESPN as the No.9 DT prospect in the nation. But there is a lot of speed and a heaping helping of size in this entire class, so look for all 17 JC recruits to get serious opportunities to earn significant playing time this fall.

And the haul among high school athletes was equally impressive, as Idaho went coast to coast in search of playmakers. Tailback Aaron Duckworth (a UAB commit until two weeks ago out of Florida), cornerback Dorian Clark (a cornerback poised to earn immediately playing time this fall out of Florida), wide receiver Michael Garner (an explosive playmaker out of San Diego), athlete Kaden Elliss (a quarterback named Utah's Most Valuable Player in 2013 after leading his school to its first state championship in 30 years), and 6-foot-6, 220-pound quarterback Jake Luton (a First Team All-Wesco selection) joined the program from around the nation. The Vandals also stayed close to home to land QB Gunnar Amos (a 4.56-40 athlete out of powerhouse Coeur d'Alene who is expected to grayshirt this fall), wide receiver David Ungerer (4.52-40 out of Pullman), and offensive lineman Jordan Rose (a 6-foot-6 prospect out of Rockford, WA).

We will have more on this class in the coming weeks, but below is a summary of the newcomers slated to join the program:
