McCain added to Biletnikoff Award Watch List

SIGNED OUT OF JC AS A QUARTERBACK LAST YEAR, senior JOSH MCCAIN worked under center as a backup who saw significant playing time. Called to duty to give the offense a spark, McCain's athletic ability was impressive. This spring he selflessly agreed to move to wide receiver and has been outstanding, climbing to the top of the depth chart and gaining 568 yards with six TDs as Idaho's No.1 target.

University of Idaho senior receiver Joshua McCain, who is in just his eighth month of playing the position, was added Tuesday to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.

“I’m proud of him,” coach Paul Petrino said. “He’s been consistent week-in and week-out. And again, like I’ve said, I think he can get better and better each week.

“I’m glad he’s on the list. I’m happy for him.”

McCain currently is the Sun Belt Conference leader in receiving yards per game (113.6) and in receiving touchdowns (6). He is second in the league in receptions per game (7.4) and total receiving yards (568). Nationally, those numbers are sixth in receiving touchdowns, 10 in receiving yards per game, 15 in receptions per game, and 16th in total receiving yards.

After spending all but one play of career (high school, junior college and last season at Idaho) at quarterback, he has exhibited a knack for the position with three of his five games as a receiver total more than 100 yards. He said his lone play as a receiver before the fall of 2014 was a trick play during his high school all-star game.

The Biletnikoff Award, named to honor legendary Oakland Raiders and Florida State receiver Fred Biletnikoff, is given annually to the nation’s top receiver. A national selection committee votes on the award but fans can have a voice. The top vote getter in the fan poll will receive one additional vote.
