Cruisin' to Las Cruces

This Saturday Idaho will be heading to Las Cruces, New Mexico to take on senior tailback Eric Higgins and the New Mexico State Aggies at Aggie Memorial Stadium. This will be the 10th meeting between the 2 teams, with Idaho holding a 7-3 advantage. But the Aggies have won the last 2 meetings, outscoring Idaho 46-39 in 2001 and 35-31 last season.

The links below should give you a pretty thorough introduction to Idaho's next opponent, the New Mexico State Aggies (1-3, 0-0 SBC). This is the Conference opener for both schools, and both programs are hoping to rebound from frustrating non-conference schedules. The Aggies opened the season getting thumped by Texas (66-7), then whipped Division II Western New Mexico (48-3), followed up by narrow losses to Oregon State (28-16) and arch-rival New Mexico (24-17). The Aggies feature a staunch defense and an offense looking for some answers. If it sounds a little familiar to our own struggles, it should.

In the 10 game series, the main way to characterize it is "closely matched." Since the 2 teams first met in 1971 (UI won 19-14), the winner has been decided by 7 or fewer points SIX out of the ten meetings (including a double overtime thriller in Moscow in 2000 that Idaho won, 44-41). The Aggies traditionally have a powerful rushing attack, but have seen their share of struggles this season. Idaho will be bringing in a defense that has done remarkably well defending the pass, but has given up monstrous yards on the ground all year. Will be interesting to see which team comes out on top in this could very likely decide the outcome of the game.
