MOSCOW, Idaho – A passion for athletics and a heartfelt desire to serve the University of Idaho are Rob Spear's reasons for accepting the role of interim Director of Athletics at the University of Idaho.

Interim president Gary Michael said those are exactly the reasons he turned to Spear.

"There always is a void when someone leaves," Michael said Friday morning. "Rob is the right guy to fill this one. People here know him and trust him. He makes people comfortable."

Spear's love of athletics is a lifelong one – from his days as a high school player in his native Butte, Mont., to his years as a four-year letterman at the University of Great Falls, on to a two-year professional career with the George Karl- coached Montana Golden Nuggets of the Continental Basketball Association.

Hence, the chance to lead the Vandals appeared to be a golden one.

"When you've been involved in athletics, just having the opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime thing," he said. "I wanted to seize that opportunity.

"This has energized me."

Spear has been at UI since 1989 and for the past six months has served as its interim assistant financial vice president. He started his UI career as an internal auditor and he later worked in grants contracts. More recently, Spear has been an Assistant Vice President for University Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Along the way, he added his doctoral degree in education from UI in 1993 safter earning his MBA from Montana in 1983 and his bachelor's degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980.

"I have a passion for the University of Idaho," Spear said. "It's a great academic institution."

Spear and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan.
