Spokesman Review reports Holt is top candidate

Spokane's Spokesman Review newspaper is reporting tonight that USC assistant coach Nick Holt is Idaho's top candidate to replace Tom Cable, and that Idaho could announce its new head football coach this Sunday or Monday (likely after he helps prepare the Trojan defense to take on Oregon State this Saturday).

The Spokesman Review has been covering Idaho's search to replace head football coach Tom Cable, and tonight broke a story on their website that Idaho is nearing a deal with current USC assistant Nick Holt. The Spokesman is also reporting that one of the 4 candidates, former Assistant Head Coach for Washington State Kasey Dunn, has been contacted and informed that he was not Idaho's choice this time. Kasey, of course, handled the news with class.

Two other candidates reportedly having interviewed with the search committee are Utah assistant head coach Brent Myers (reported to have interviewed this week in Utah, along with Dunn and Holt), and Baylor offensive coordinator Brent Pease (reported to have interviewed last week). All indications thus far are pointing towards Holt as the top candidate, according to the Spokesman Review report.

Nick, 41, has spent the past 3 seasons with the Trojans, a stint that has included helping to build one of the most powerful defenses in the West, coaching an All-PAC-10 first team linebacker in 2002, and this season has taken a linebacking corp devastated by injuries and converted them into a cohesive, effective unit.

Nick's college coaching career has spanned over 15 years, beginning with a 3 year stint at UNLV ('87-'89), followed by 8 years with the University of Idaho from '90 through '97 (the last 4 years as Idaho's Defensive Coordinator, whose defense was ranked #1 in 1-AA in '95, and 5th in '96), and finally 3 years at Louisville before joining Pete Carrol's staff at USC.

While in college at Pacific, Nick was an All-American honorable mention linebacker as a senior, as well as Pacific's MVP.

Obviously, this is mostly still speculation until the University makes a formal announcement. We will continue to track these reports as they become news.
