Men Rolling, Women Hangin' Tough

With all the excitement on this board regarding football coach Nick Holt's first recruiting class, something remarkable happened. The Vandal Men's BB team went on a tear! Over the course of the last 2 weeks, the Men went 4-1 on their longest homestand of the season, and have moved into a tie for 4th in the Conference.

Meanwhile, the young Women's team continues to mature as they maintained their position as the #3 team in the BWC.

Congratulations to both teams!

MEN'S SUMMARY: The Vandal men's basketball team (9-12, 5-6 BWC) is starting to play together as a cohesive unit. A group that has been forced to gel given the loss of key personnel during the off-season is admittedly "buying into" coach Leonard Perry's system now, and the results are paying dividends in the win column. The team is going back to its roots, playing aggressive defense, and they are starting to frustrate teams in the Big West. Its a common trait of Perry coached Idaho teams that was missing early in this season, but now appears to be coming back. Led by this week's Big West Conference Player of the Week, shooting guard Dwayne Williams, Idaho enjoyed its first 4-game winning streak since 1999. This week they look to extend that streak as they hit the road to play Pacific (Thursday) and Cal State Northridge (Saturday).

WOMEN'S SUMMARY: The Vandal women's basketball team (15-5, 7-4 BWC) continues its quest to remain one of the top Big West Conference teams, this week maintaining their hold on third place in the conference standings. Opposing teams are preparing for the young Vandal team, and their young nucleus of talented leaders (including sophomore post Emily Faurholt who remains the #1 scorer in the nation) is learning to rise to the challenge of a long college basketball season. This week the team returns home after 2 consecutive weeks on the road in which they went 2-2. The Vandals take on Pacific Thursday night, and Cal State Northridge Saturday night. Both games will be played in the Cowan Spectrum, and both games tip-off at 7pm. Make plans to attend today!

The Big West Player of the Week, Idaho senior shooting guard Dwayne "Woo" Williams. Williams' sharp-shooting from 3-point range was a key factor in the Vandals winning and in his earning the honor – the first of the season for a UI player. He connected on 16-of-31 3-point attempts in those three games. For the second (vs. Idaho State) and third (vs. UC Santa Barbara) times in his career, Williams had six 3s in one game. He is fourth on UI's all-time 3-point goals made list (114) and fifth on the Vandals' all-time 3-point attempts (307) list. (VV.com Image / VandalMar)
