A remarkable 2003-2004 regular season comes to an end for the Vandal Women (21-6, 13-5 BWC) as they earn an impressive 80-65 victory on the road at Utah State Friday night. With the victory the women claim the No. 2 seeding going into the Big West Tournament, earning 2 byes as they prepare to battle the best of the Big West with a conference championship and NCAA tournament birth at stake.

Congratulations to the Vandal Women on an outstanding regular season effort!

Vandals true freshman guard Leilani Mitchell has had an incredible first season in Moscow, moving into the UI record books in free throws and assists in a single season.

WOMEN'S SUMMARY: The amazing ride that is the 2003-2004 season for the Vandal Women now will shift gears from the regular season to the post season, which includes a No. 2 seed in the BWC tournament and an opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament or the NIT. Whatever the rest of the season has in store for Idaho remains to be seen, but the regular season has been incredibly remarkable for this young team. How young? The starting unit for much of the season has included 2 freshman (Leilani Mitchell and Karly Felton), a sophomore (Emily Faurholt), a junior (Heather Thoelke), and just one senior (Taylor Benson).

As much as this team has won as a group (with strong contributions by just about everyone on the roster this season), they've also done a number on the UI individual record books as well.

* Emily Faurholt has been the Nation's #1 scorer since December (26+ PPG).

* Faurholt holds the UI single season record for points scored (705).

* Faurholt holds the UI single season record for free throws made (164).

* Faurholt holds the UI record for points in a game (39).

* Leilani Mitchell is 5th in assists in a season (156).

* Mitchell is at least 4th on free-throws made in a season (130).

* Taylor Benson is 5th in career 3-pointers (86).

* Heather Thoelke is 7th in career 3-pointers (79).

The list of individual accomplishments for this team is impressive, but we're fairly confident that this unit would like to keep playing as deep into March as possible. That opportunity comes next week as they will go into the Conference tournament with 2 byes. The high seeding means they need just one victory to propel themselves into the Conference championship, where an NCAA bid will be at stake.

From all of us at, congratulations to the Vandal women's team on an outstanding season, and best of luck at the Big West Tourney!
