Beats Eastern Washington University 56-44 Friday night.

CHENEY -- The University of Idaho women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season, beating Eastern Washington University 56-44 Friday night.

The Vandals, down to six healthy players, recovered from a 14-point early-game deficit to take the lead midway through the second half. Tenacious defense, solid rebounding and Jen Schooler's 10-of-13 effort from the free throw line pushed the Vandals to victory.

"The kids just said that was more than a win, it was a lifeline," said coach Mike Divilbiss, as the Vandals went to 1-4 on the season while dropping the Eagles to 1-5. "I don't think I've ever been happier than I am with that group of kids."

After trailing 16-2, the Vandals chipped away at the Eagles with the steady inside play of Keisha Moore and the inspirational play of Schooler, who not only made the clutch free throws but was a persistent menace to EWU ballhandlers, registering six steals.

The Vandals kept up the defensive pressure and held the Eagles to 20.7 percent shooting in the second half. On the other end of the court, they relaxed into an offensive rhythm that enabled them to make 45.8 percent of their second half shots and 36 percent for the game.

Moore led the Vandals in scoring with 18 points but there was help from everywhere as Schooler finished with 16 points and three rebounds, and Darci Pemberton had 10 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with about five minutes to play.

"This is great," Divilbiss said. "These kids needed something positive to happen."
